Theme: CURRICULUM AT THE CROSSROADS ; THE ROLE OF UNIVERSITIES CERM-ESA colloquium will focus on the role of universities in terms of their contribution to school and teacher education curriculum development and implementation While this colloquium will take place in the context of changes to the school curriculum in Kenya, its aim is not to discuss the merits or demerits of the new Competency Based Curriculum for Kenyan schools, but to focus on the roles that universities might play in terms of research and development of curricula and teacher development, both in times of curriculum change and during the periods between changes. International experiences will be shared and, although the stance of the colloquium is not to debate the current Competence Based Curriculum and/or its implementation, the Kenyan Institute for Curriculum Development and the Kenyan National Union of Teachers will be given an opportunity to provide perspectives in terms of the reasons for adopting the CBC and the research findings to date, respectively. Also, as curriculum changes usually begin in the lower grades and then progress upwards, the underpinning theme of the colloquium will be on the early learning years of schooling.
